Tarot In Popular Culture

Sometimes, Tarot shows up in the strangest places: movies, plays and especially song lyrics. Here are just a few Tarot sightings...

Dark Lady
(music and Lyrics by S. Bono, performed by Cher)

The fortune queen of New Orleans
Was brushing her cat in her black limousine.
On the back seat were scratches from
The marks of men whose fortune she had won.
Couldn't see through the tinted glass.
She said, "Home, James," and he hit the gas.
Followed her to some darkened room.
She took my money, she said, "I'll be with you soon."

Chorus: Dark Lady laughed and danced
And lit the candles one by one,
Danced to her gypsy music 'til the brew was done.
Dark Lady played black magic
'Til the clock struck on the twelve.
She told me more about me than I knew myself.

She dealt two cards, a Queen and a three,
And mumbled some words that were so strange to me.
And then she turned up a two-eyed Jack,
My eyes saw red, but the cards still stayed black.
She said, "The man you love is secretly true
"To someone else who is very close to you.
"My advice is that you leave this place.
"Never come back and forget you ever saw my face!"

(repeat chorus)

So I went home and crawled in my bed.
I couldn't sleep because of all the things she said.
And then I remembered her strange perfume,
And how it smelled, it was in my own room!
So I sneaked back and caught her with my man,
Laughin' and kissin' 'til they saw the gun in my hand.
The next thing I knew, they were dead on the floor.
Dark Lady would never turn a card up anymore.

(repeat chorus)

Tarot Woman
(performed by Rainbow)

I don't wanna go.
Something tells me no, no, no, no,
But traces in the sand,
The lines inside my hand say go, go, go.

Beware of a place,
A smile on a bright shiny face.
I'll never return, how do you know,
Tarot woman, I don't know, I don't know.

She can take you there,
The entrance to the fair, my, my, my.
Ride the carousel,
Cast a music spell, you can fly, fly.

Something in the air
Tells me to beware, no, no, no.
Her love is like a knife,
She'll carve away your life, so go, so go.

Tarot
(written and performed by Yngwie Malmsteen)

I don't know for sure,
But I've been told
I have lived before
And I'll live again
In a distant land,
In the Spirit Realm,
Not as the Heathen in the North
Tarot!
Tarot!
Tarot!
Is there a crystal ball
To enlighten me,
Anything at all
to make me see
What the future holds?

What has been before,
Like the seer from the East,
Not as the Heathen from the North.
Tarot!
Tarot!
Tarot!
Like the seer from the East,
Not as the Heathen from the North.
Tarot!
Tarot!
Tarot!
Tarot!
TAROT!
